Incident – White tooth root filling

The patient when he visited the office for the purpose of correcting a „blackness“ that he has seen for a long time on the left canine of the lower jaw. This „blackness“ was not as innocent and easy as it sounded. The clinical picture revealed the presence of deep caries in the root of the tooth, which reached the level of the nerve of the tooth. The decay in the root of the tooth is due to the way the patient has been brushing his teeth and has caused the gums to recede. Gum recession is accompanied by exposure of dental substance, which under normal conditions is covered with gums.

After the administration of local anesthesia, the decayed dental tissues were removed, a special material to protect the nerve of the tooth was placed and the dental damage was reconstructed. The presence of blood seen in the photo is a temporary irritation of the gums from the dental procedure, which subsides within a few hours.

The patient is pleased with both the aesthetics and the functional performance of the new white filling on the root of his tooth.

The patient had undergone surgery for tongue cancer. The maxillofacial surgeons who performed the operation gave instructions to the patient that in case a tooth extraction is needed, under no circumstances should it be performed by a simple dentist but only by a maxillofacial surgeon.

The patient visited his dentist for his annual routine dental check-up. The clinical examination revealed a root caries and the patient was recommended to extract the tooth. The patient, according to the maxillofacial surgeons‘ instructions, refused the extraction of his tooth, visited our office and explained his history.

After the necessary consultation with the patient, it was decided to perform a seal on the root of the tooth at the point that had been affected by caries.

After one week, a recheck was performed and it was found that both the tooth was asymptomatic and that the gum inflammation had subsided. Of course, a necessary condition was the excellent daily oral hygiene practiced by the patient at home.

The patient is actually very happy to have avoided tooth extraction. A white filling on the root of the tooth has a specific lifespan and requires a daily thorough oral hygiene. As we typically said with the patient at the end of the session: „You will get bored of brushing your teeth!“.
